Fics marked with a ♥ are personal favorites of mine.
-
Scenes from Bren and his family on the path of Bren becoming the paidhi. (3,308 words)
Rec: Interesting take on Bren's youth. Coping Mechanisms by Anonymous (PG-13)
He catches Ripley’s hand in mid-arc. It’s shaking, more with anger, he realizes, than fear. He brings her cigarette to his own mouth for a drag, and she lets him. They’re connected now. (1,841 words)
Working Title by Anonymous (G)
Before the Pin, the upper crust enjoyed a different kind of pastime. (3,062 words)
Rec: A Kara-centric piece, with quite a unique take on what happens after the movie. Basically, Kara takes over the betting scene/criminal underworld. I would have liked more Brendan in it, though that's just my personal preferences.Dreaming of Churrascarias by Anonymous (PG-13)
A cup of coffee and a slice of pie - the last meal of Brendan Frye. (1,983 words)
Rec: This one is an odd future!fic that has a hard-boiled noir feel to it. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but interesting.Chronicles of Fry by Anonymous (R)
What if Carolyn had survived the planet? (4,290 words) (Carolyn Fry/Richard B. Riddick)
Rec: Exploring the fun idea that Carolyn was somehow saved after Riddick and the rest left the planet in "Pitch Black," and follows her as she tries to track down Riddick. Takes parts of "The Chronicles of Riddick," but with no mention of the Necromongers.Chase Scene by Anonymous (PG-13)
Harry's on the run with amnesia in a Chicago blizzard. Murphy's on his trail, but unfortunately he doesn't remember enough to know that she isn't the enemy. Takes place somewhere between Small Favor and Turn Coat. (10,459 words)
Rec: A fun, action packed story that feels like it could be one of Jim Butcher's short stories.Cal Leandros' 12-Step Program for Surviving Father's Day by Anonymous (R)
Cal has daddy issues and a list. This probably isn't going to end well, at least not for Robin. (Robin Goodfellow/Caliban Leandros) (11,109 words)
Rec: I never though of this pairing before, for some reason, but the author made it work and the story really captures the dark and snarky tone of the books. Excellent Robin POV.♥ The Way by Anonymous (PG-13)
AU for the end of Season 2. Lundy stays in Miami. The way Frank Lundy finds a killer. (3,114 words) (Frank Lundy/Debra Morgan, Rita Bennet/Dexter Morgan
Rec: This is one of my favorite yuletide fics this year, and probably my favorite Dexter fic. This is where I thought the show was going, and am thrilled someone decided to further explore the interactions between Lundy and Dexter. Excellent Lundy POV and perfectly captured Deb dialog. My only complaint: I wanted more! :DA woman's whole heart by Anonymous (PG-13)
The curse has been broken, but Isabeau still doesn't feel complete. (Isabeau d'Anjou/Etienne Navarre) (3543 words)
Rec: A melancholy exploration of Isabeau trying to rejoin society after the end of the movie, and discovering how much she dislikes it's constrains and strictures. Historically accurate (as far as I can tell) feminist meta! They Have To Take You In by Anonymous (PG-13)
Ben needs a place to stay. (Warren/Kyle, Warren/Kyle/Ben) (1,593 words)
Rec: Here's another pairing I never considered, but really enjoyed. A brief hurt/comfort story with Warren and Kyle welcoming Ben into their home after the traumatic events of one of the books (can't remember the title right now).Tinker, Tailor, Gardener, Spy by Anonymous (G)
Bashir comes to visit Garak's shop. Set after the events of Ep. 514, "Doctor Bashir, I Presume?" (1,028 words)
Unexpected Camaraderie by Anonymous (PG-13)
Garak and Julian think about what brought them to where they are now. (1,793 words)
New Process by Anonymous (PG-13)
Todd does not think like the colonists do. He doesn't register injury like they do, but he feels the ways he is somehow wrong nonetheless. (1,647 words)
Rec: I enjoyed the movie, back when I first saw it and this fic is a great character study of Todd afterwards.♥ What You See Is What You Get (If You're Looking Hard Enough) by Anonymous (PG-13)
Patrick Jane is only human. (17,191 words)
Recs: A superb re-imagining of the Mentalist in a fantasy & steampunk world. Fabulous world building, and includes the team investigating cases and learning each others secrets. One of my favorite yuletide fics this year.Start of Line by Anonymous (PG-13)
On the grid, everything old is new again. (2,025 words)
Autonomy in the Nick of Time by Anonymous (G)
Alan knew TRON could affect the MCP when he spoke to Flynn. This is why. (1,173 words)
No Need To Be Pissed To Do the Mambo by Anonymous (PG-13)
Bob takes to calling it their anniversary. (1,554 words) (Handsome Bob/One Two)
Meta Yuletide Fic (The Fic You Wish Your Fic Smelled Like) by Anonymous (G)
"Why hello, Yuletide reader. Why don't you sit down for a bit? Get comfortable, because when you click my link you will be reading a work of such magnificence that you won't be able to look away, even if a crew of zombies breaks through your window and bites your neck." (2,367 words)
Rec: A hilarious meta fic "written by" the Old Spic commercial guy, or at least extremely reminiscent of his style. Chock full of fandom references, including links and footnotes.Guns 'n' Neuroses by Anonymous (PG-13)
Niles and Frasier, hunters of the supernatural. (2,592 words)
Rec: After the Frasier brothers discover the supernatural, they go on the road to fight the evil out there. The story starts out Frasier canon-compliant, and while staying completely in character has Frasier and Niles hit the road, paralleling the way the Winchester brothers traveling. Somehow the author has made it work.Have A Little Faith In Me by Anonymous (PG-13)
Questionable ethics? Check. Improbable plot? Check. Teamwork, despite all the odds? Check. Scooby Doo theme song? Check! (12,459 words)
Rec: Some fun moments between Freya and Brendan, and a case to investigate, as well as some inter-agency conflict. It would have been even better if both the bomber case and the conflict with the other agency had been more fleshed out, but at ~12,000 words, it's pretty long for a yuletide fic already and still well drawn.♥ Lieutenant Bennet's Visit by Anonymous (PG-13)
Elizabeth’s reality is far different from her sisters’. (3,172 words)
Recs: Another best-of Yuletide 2010. A perfect fusion of "Pride & Prejudice" and "Temeraire," with great feminist meta underlying the story. I wish it were ten times longer, but still utterly delightful.-
After Beowulf's death, the men of Geatland meet a strange and powerful warrior. (482 words) -- Up then came / a worthy warrior,
Oak-tall, oak-strong / shorn-locked, short-shaven,
Dark as leather / dyed in walnut;
Clad in canvas / white as moonlight.
Up he strode / fearless, noble,
where Geatlings gathered. / Scorning arms
He spoke these words: / "Look upon me.
Now upon yourselves. / Again upon me.
You are not me." / Deep his voice
Like thunder's cry / or breath of God.
Woe to the warriors! / How they trembled!
Then again spoke / the white-garbed warrior:
"Nor have your coats / the smell of me,
For rather smell you / of maidens' nosegays
Or worse, of dead fish / silver fish hand-caught."
Rec: The Old Spic Guy in Beowulf. It shouldn't work, but the author captured the prose style of "Beowulf" and suffused it with the Old Spice Guy's style. It's only a few hundred words, but wow what a clever crack complex fic.
I'm exploring posting from Diigo. I think I prefer the way coding everything myself looks, but this is certainly easier and faster.
